Education as Experiment

AAC Retrospective

The Knitted Jungle Collective have been invited to run a knitting circle and discussion group.

Macho Versus the Feminine
·      – How does gender affect the way creative outcomes are valued?

·      – How is this manifested and reinforced by the pedagogy and structure at art institutions?

We will be creating a space for people to learn/share how to knit and crochet whilst discussing relationship between craft, art and gender.
We will facilitate for all abilities.
Knitting and crochet circles create wonderful spaces for people to get together and talk. We aim to use this space created as a platform to encourage people to explore political and social ideas together. Starting from the basis that everyone gains knowledge from experience and all knowledge is equal and valuable. Crafts such as knitting and crochet seem innately feminine and are traditionally female pursuits. We would like to start a dialogue about how these crafts are culturally valued and what role Art institutions play in reinforcing this potential perpetuation of patriarchy.

Plastic Bags

Plastic Crochet

http://szildiko.blogspot.co.uk/2009/02/bit-of-knitting-here-and-there.html

These floral designs are crocheted out of plastic bags. The artist is Ildiko Szabo.

I found this nice site with great instructions on how to make quick plastic bag yarns. link

Ildiko Szabo does freeform crochet. Here are some examples of other pieces and shapes she has made. They have given me lots of ideas for jungle flora and fauna shapes.

The KJC are proud and excited to announce that they were shortlisted for the Richard Parry Emerging Artist Award 2011 and won £100. We hope to put the money towards a show in 2012. Here is a Giff made to commemorate the event and its nominees. If you look carefully you can see flashes of Jungle.

11 days till Christmas

The Christmas tree at Cramlington library where the knitting club made the Christmas tree and all its decorations.

11 days left till Christmas, at least 6 trees so far. if you are thinking of making us a tree but not sure what to go for here are some ideas for shapes and techniques.

This is a crocheted tree by Klas Ernflo.

I have been experimenting with knitting in the round for the first time. I made a mitten shape and attached lots of little leaves I have made but what about knitting a trunk and then attaching pom poms?

If knitting in the round is still a little daunting (although having finally braved it i can confidently say it is easy) then just knit a rectangle/ scarf and sew it up the back.  Crochet is a great way to free style 3d shapes and round forms.

Here are some drawings I did imagining the different shapes and possibilities of knitted trees:

You can make your tree any colour and scale you like. Why not try stuffing your tree with old t-shirts to make it stiffer so it can be free standing.

Here are some different stitches i found to get your tree juices flowing:

Happy festive season x

A Communiqué from KJC Nottingham

Hi,
We are the KJC Nottingham. There are a group of us here who meet up weekly to knit and talk current issues. We support each other with our knitting and create a safe and friendly environment to air our views and concerns in our day to day lives and the rest of the world. We communicate with KJC London to keep up with our and their progress and of course the development of the jungle.
