If you want to learn to knit I have just found this great website:

I have found that a good way to start is too launch straight into actually making something once you have the stitches, knit and purl, otherwise you might find yourself wondering what you are going to do with this useless looking square and like me might create a mental block about following patterns. I have been knitting since my mum taught me when I was 5 but did not follow a pattern until about 3 years ago just because I thought it would be too advanced for me. I had a big surprise when I found out how easy it was. Almost all books on knitting will have a list of abbreviations in the front or back so don’t get scared by what might at first look like gobbledy gook.

I found a blog that has some free patterns to get you started with including a lovely slug and some leaves.
