A bit about the Knitted Jungle Collective

We are knitting a jungle.

We are knitting a jungle and inviting anyone who wants to contribute to do so.

We were inspired by our ability to knit and by our prior inability to actually knit anything useful. We found a children’s book, First Book of Knitting for Children by Bonnie Gosse and Jill Allerton, tfollowed a couple of patterns ans had so much fun we decided to knit a whole jungle…

We have set some parameters :

Materials used should be found, recycled or reclaimed wherever possible. There is enough stuff in the world and we would not like to think our jungle is encouraging the production of more from raw materials. Knit with wool, knit with fabric, knit with plastic, just knit.

The aim is to end up with a “jungle”. This is  not defined, it can be imagined or from life. Elements 2D or 3D. There is no set scale either, it is an exercise in matching skill and knowledge with imagination.

All elements can be either knitted or crocheted as you wish

And last but not least we have decided that there should be no human presence at all in the knitted jungle.

All contributors so far have been female. Is this going to be an all female project? This is neither a challenge nor a query, but is it going to be a parameter?

Talking to friends and family we are excited by the possibilities, some are teaching themselves to knit for the first time. Others have been motivated to explore new patterns, stitches and techniques.

The question of where and how the jungle will be displayed is an ongoing dialogue.

We are attempting to meet once a week in London to knit and share. If you are not in London and want to contribute or get involved why not see if you can get together with friends wherever you are from? We are still happy to help from afar. If you have any technical questions, feel free to contact us, we are happy to try and help. And should you have skills patterns or techniques you could share with us send them over and we will put them up on the blog. Otherwise if you want to let us know we can give you the log in so you can upload and contribute tips yourself directly.

Good luck with your knitted jungle lovelies! I’ve never learnt to knit and am too busy gazing at baby Iris but I did a quick search and found a website with loads of animal patterns, quite a few would probably hang out in a jungle. Maybe it could be a travelling menagerie and be added to in all the places you visit? Also, I think you should encourage not exclude the menfolk as there’s nothing nicer than a man knitting an elephant! xx
